Laptop battery saving refresh rate 40Hz/60Hz
I have a couple of laptops that allow me to change the refresh rate of the built-in monitors to save power consumption when on battery. By default they are going 60Hz, but through Gnome Settings
> Displays
I am able to select a lower refresh rate at 40Hz. This works without any problems and it switches quite fast.
I like to have them running at 40Hz when going on battery, as it saves on the power consumption. In Xorg I was able to have a small script that would trigger once the laptops were switched between AC or battery power.
I cannot seem to find an easy way to do this in Gnome Wayland (Mutter) by using a script. I can only do it through Gnome Settings
, but I would very much like to avoid having to do it there all the time (which means I never do it anymore).
Maybe it belongs in the Gnome Settings
issues. I am not sure.
I personally am fine if there is a way to switch between the two refresh rates by issuing a script.
Ideally this is something that can be enabled/disabled in the Gnome Settings
, if multiple refresh rates are registered for a specific resolution. Then you could specify a refresh rate for when on battery and another for when on AC.
Both laptops were advertised with this functionality and in Windows they both switched automatically when set up to do so in Windows Control Panel. Therefore I don't think it is out of the ordinary to have the same functionality in Gnome as well.
The two laptops I have that can do this are:
- HP Spectre (2016)
- Sony Vaio Pro 13
