High CPU usage when moving mouse cursor

Whenever I start moving my mouse (not moving windows or anything, just the pointer), the
gnome-shell process CPU utilization raises to ~23-30% together with
XOrg process (around 16-23%) and
gjs (16%). When the mouse is idle, CPU falls back to 1-2% overall.
When disabling all the extensions, the situation remains the same, with the exception that
gjs is not taking up CPU time.
Changing mouse poll time (currently 1000Hz) to 125Hz has no effect.
Edit: 1000hz mouse poll is the cause. Can't change this though (xhci-hcd ignores the non-default polling rate).
