On-screen keyboard no longer displays on GNOME 40 (Wayland only)

Affected version

  • GNOME Shell 40.0
  • Arch Linux (installed using the gnome-unstable repo since the stable Arch repos still ships GNOME 3.38)
  • Wayland - it works with Xorg

Bug summary

Since after I updated to GNOME 40, using Arch's gnome-unstable as mentioned above, the OSK does not show up when tapping a text field on a touch screen, or swiping up from the bottom edge (the touch screen and the other gestures work properly)

If I enable the OSK from the accessibility settings it works properly and it does show up if I swipe from the bottom edge. However, this is not an acceptable workaround since it will also show up if I click on a text field with other input devices, not just with the touch screen.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Tap a text field (such as the search field in the overview)

or

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen

What happened

Nothing.

What did you expect to happen

I'd expect the OSK to pop up.
