Screen tearing in Wayland on tiled displays
Affected version
- Fedora 34 Beta
- mutter-40.0
- Issue only appears in Wayland (no tearing in XOrg)
Bug summary
On tiled displays such as the Dell UP2414Q or LG UltraFine 5K 27MD5KA, there is visible screen tearing between the two halves of the display when using an Intel GPU. This only occurs under Wayland, and XOrg is tear-free.
Steps to reproduce (I have an i7-10710U):
- Connect tiled 5K display (I have the LG UltraFine 5K 27MD5KA)
- Run GNOME 3.38 Wayland session
- Play video with fast motion, such as this one in fullscreen on 5K monitor. Reproducible with MPV or Firefox (and probably others).
- Observe tearing between the two halves of the screen

I have also filed this bug on the Intel side a while back, but I'm not sure if it's a GNOME or Intel driver bug: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/2566
