Display arrangement lost after switching displays with Super+P

Using Arch Linux with gnome-shell 3.36.1-1, using xorg-server 1.20.8-1.
Bug summary
After switching the display mode from "join displays" to built-in display and back, the monitor orientation and the choice of primary display are lost.
Steps to reproduce
- Connect external monitor to laptop.
- Arrange external monitor above built-in and set external monitor as primary in Settings > Displays.
- Change to built-in display using Super+P.
- Switch back to "join displays" using Super+P.
What happened
The display setting is reset to the default: external right of built-in, and built-in as primary
What did you expect to happen
The settings should be preserved on a per-monitor/per-setup basis.
