dark mode unavailable with 1.4.0?

Hi. I just update libadwaita in OpenBSD to version 1.4.0. This is on GNOME 44.5. It looks like applications using libadwaita are not using the dark them, whatever I set in gnome-control-center. It might be PEBKAC but I haven't changed anything in my config lately. Thanks for any hint :-)
