Takes a long time to find workgroups / hosts / shares

Description
I can connect to windows (samba) shares just fine with nautilus if I provide a full smb://host/share URL. Mounting is fast and everything seems to work great.
However, going to smb:// to see a list of workgroups or going to smb://host/ to see a list of shares from host does not seem to work most of the time. To be more specific, I see my mouse pointer spin for a while, then nothing happens. I need to hit refresh about 50 times to make the workgroup/share show up.
I can reproduce this the same way when using 'gvfs-ls smb://' or 'gvfs-ls smb://host'. In both cases I need to run the command about 50 times before I get a result. After that, it works fine.
Note that 'smbclient -L localhost' does not seem to have this problem and shows the information without delay. Also, pyNeighborhood only takes about two seconds to find all workgroups, hosts and shares and display them in its treeview.
Note 2: I only have a handful of machines on this LAN, all running linux and none of them running samba. All the tests above have been done locally.
