I got an update to Gtranslator today in Fedora 29 (specifically, version 3.30.0), and I am really liking the redesign. The updated program looks really clean and fresh. I currently normally use Poedit, but I would like to switch to Gtranslator. There are a few things that don't really do it for me currently, though, and they are sufficiently small that I thought to condense them into a single issue.
Let me preface, however, by saying that I like 99% of the redesign and that the program looks and feels awesome.
So here the tiny things that I think might be improved, as a user and translator:
There is no index next to the strings. What I mean by this, is that there is no number next to the translatable strings that tells you that the string is the Nth string to appear in the file. Having a little number next to the strings is really helpful as a slight aid that tells you how far along you are, and is also helpful when you need to scroll away from the current translation, and then go back.
I cannot find an easy way to figure out the file(s) and line number(s) of a translatable string. These are super handy to have, because they allow me to read the source code for extra context in regard to the translation.
Right-clicking on translatable strings does nothing. This is especially minor, but I think it would be handy to be able to right-click on strings to interact with them. For instance, toggling fuzzy state, copying the source text, the translation text, or editing the comment.
There is no way to see whether a string has a comment without clicking on it. Often, when you have a series of translatable strings that are all somehow related, one might add a comment to the first string that applies to all following strings in the series as well.
Translations aren't thoroughly verified. One can translate "_Cancel" as "Nuligi", and Gtranslator doesn't complain that you forgot the underscore. Similarly, Gtranslator doesn't complain when the translation has a full stop at the end and the original does not, and vice versa. I'm not sure if other translators appreciate it, but I like it when the program notifies me in some way that I probably made an error.
It would be nice to have a keyboard shortcut overview like some other GNOME applications do. Specifically, I am looking for a shortcut that goes to the next/previous string, and to the next/previous untranslated string. It probably exists (and if it doesn't, that would be a super helpful feature), but I unfortunately cannot find the shortcut.EDIT: This is totally there, just under a different menu than the one I expected!
I hope that some of the above insights are useful. Thank you for making such an awesome piece of software :)
