Mouse pointer randomly changes and gets stuck on slide or expand pointers instead of standard pointer

I've only noticed this problem on Mac OS X El Capitan, but I haven't tested the latest version on anything else yet. I used to use 6.12 on Ubuntu and never encountered this problem.
I also can't seem to figure out what triggers the problem, but it has something to do with switching focus between GnuCash and a native Mac app. (that is, one not using GTK)
When switching focus back to GnuCash from anything, even the desktop, the mouse pointer randomly changes to either a slide pointer or expand pointer. (in various directions) It also gets stuck in that state. I have to wiggle the mouse around, sometimes more than once, activating the Mac's pointer locator feature to resolve it.(the feature that enlarges the pointer when the mouse is wiggled quickly) This locator feature changes the pointer to a larger version of the standard pointer so it is noticeable on the screen. After that, the pointer stays normal until it decides to change again when I switch focus.
Also it is not just the pointer icon that changes, but the mouse function to match it. So I have to resolve the pointer back to the standard one to continue using GnuCash. Switching back and forth to non GTK apps and GnuCash does not resolve anything once it gets stuck. Only using the pointer locator feature of Mac OS does the trick.
I also use GIMP which uses GTK but I think the Mac build is Cocoa now and GnuCash is not. (though I could be mistaken) I also use Inkscape and Scribus but I think both of those use QT. I haven't noticed this problem with any of those three apps.
I'll be happy to do any testing to narrow this down as it is a bit annoying.
