File chooser not keyboard friendly when selecting directories

Description
As of 2.10, with the location entry now integrated into the dialog, when browsing for a directory, it is no longer possible to type a path and browse from there and further drill down using the mouse. Hitting enter after typing the path closes the dialog and selects the path you just typed.
How I expect it to work:
- Manually type /long/path/id/rather/type/
- Hit enter, the above path shows in the chooser, showing folders and files under /long/path/id/rather/type/
- Double click the foobar folder shown here.
- Click Open on the dialog.
- The path returned by the chooser is /long/path/id/rather/type/foobar/
How it actually works:
- Manually type /long/path/id/rather/type/
- Hit enter, and the dialog closes and the above path is returned.
As a result, there seems to be a disconnect between the path entry and the iconified list of directories and files.
I understand the difficulty by behaving how I described in the "expected" steps above when hitting enter. Some alternative key would be ok, perhaps pressing tab twice, or even automatically browsing to that path when appending '/' to the path.
In gtk 2.8, hitting ctrl-l or / would popup a separate entry dialog to type the path. Hitting enter would browse to this path in the chooser. Although the separate dialog has been a source of contention, it at least accommodated the use-case I described.
This bug only applies to choosing directories. Browsing for files works fine, and in this case hitting enter on the path entry does browse to that path.
