Quick question about editing cell contents in place on Gnumeric. I have wordwrap for cells turned on. However, when I click on any cell to edit its content the cell just expands and the contents are "elongated" all over the rest of the table. i.e. the content flow over other adjoining cells in edit mode. Is there a way to contain the editing mode size to exactly the size of the cell?

no

thanks for your reply
this feature could be helpful in the future
if people do a lot of editing in place (like I do)
<aguelzow>
I do lots of editing in place but fail to see its usefulness but lots of possible issues.
I would hate if the formulas I type would try to wrap into a tiny space...
<tson>
Yes, formulas might be tricky
text is a different thing though
I guess I was suggesting it because if it were limited I could see the contents of the next cell
but as you noted, formulas might become ugly
However, if the wrap is on, wouldn't it be a safe bet to assume that whoever is editing the table would like the contents to be wrapped?
Okay, I see the drawbacks to that the formula case
because the formulas are not the endpoint of the display
but text is definitely meant for final display
<aguelzow>
The evaluation of formulas could result in text that should be wrapped. So the "wrap text" option is useful even then.
Even when entering text, wrap text does not mean that the text will not extend beyond the right side of the cell since wrap-text will not break words.
<tson>
I am not sure I understand the last sentence. "Wrap text" just wraps the content of the cell so that it fits into the space of the cell. It doesn't extend beyond the right side of the cell because that is what it is wrapping, no?
It doesn't break words. Long words are just carried over to the next line

Sorry, I disconnected
I just installed libreoffice calc and it supports the feature. i.e. wrapped text stays wrapped even in edit mode
<aguelzow>
tson, regarding your earlier comment, I was talking about words that a wider than the column. If you are really using the spreadsheet program just to make tables rather than for calculations you may very well be better off with Libreoffice (although it would annoy me that LO takes forever to open a file.)
<tson>
yes, that is true. It does take ages. I like gnumeric a lot because of its flexibility. I am making tables in it because it generates latex table fragments - a very handy feature for the longtable package
in brief: for a cell when "wrap text" is on and we are not editing a formula it would be nice if the width of the item-edit were limited to the current column width or the minimum needed if single words exceed the column width.
