How does XL define an 'iteration'

Link to original bug (#523508)

Description

During recalculation with cyclical references, the sheet can enter states that should not theoretically be possible, given the formulas present in the sheet cells. I propose to give this severity "major", since (a) the problem affects the major function of the program, which is calculation with correct results, and (b) the problem appears not limited to any single function, but a property of the recalculation mechanism as a whole. The problem does not occur in MS Excel. The same simple cyclical formula setup works in MS Excel, but blows up in Gnumeric. If somebody notices this problem report, I will be glad to provide examples.
