Updating Fedora Silverblue, a story of woe
Running Fedora 31 Silverblue:
- The updates list indicates that there are OS updates to be installed.
- I click "Update & Restart". The button switches to "Cancel", and nothing happens.
- I wait. Still nothing happens.
- Eventually, after some time, I click "Cancel".
- After a bit more time, a plain "Restart" system dialog pops up (no mention of updates). I assume that it's a delayed request to restart with the new update, so I restart.
- After restarting I go back to the updates view. No OS updates are listed, so I assume that the update has been installed.
- After a little while, a notification is shown: "An update has been installed. A restart is required for it to take effect." I click the body of the notification and it disappears.
- I'm left with no visible way to restart into the new version: there's no indication that there's an update pending, and when I go to restart the system there is no indication that restarting will apply a new version.
During the course of this process, I also tried clicking on a "Restart & Update" button for an outstanding firmware update that I had. That silently disappeared after I clicked it, with no restart dialog or response.
In sum: I'd started out with two updates that I'd wanted to install, had seemingly failed to install both of them, and was left with an updates view that was saying "software is up to date" - leaving me with no visible way to proceed.
