Firmware updates not being installed after restart
Running gnome-software 45.1 on Fedora Workstation 39.
Today I noticed that I had a list of firmware updates pending, so I decided to install them. I have repeatedly gone through the process of pressing the "update & restart" button, and then rebooting, but the list of updates remains the same:
My hardware is a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 2. No error message has been shown.
The experience has been made more confusing by several factors:
- After rebooting, I get a notification saying "important software updates have been installed" (or something to that effect). When I open it, a window shows a list of software updates (see screenshots below). I didn't see any installation progress screen when I rebooted, and I never told Software to install software updates, so this is a mystery. If I scroll to the bottom of the list, a firmware update is listed: "ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 2 Device Update".
- In its initial state, the "Integrated Firmware" section of the updates list has a "Download" button while the button on each row says "Update". When I click it, the button on each update row reads "Installing" rather than "Downloading". Once "Installing" has completed, the header button is labelled "Restart & Update..." and the individual rows go back to having an "Update" label. Issues here:
- In the initial state, row buttons should be labelled "Download" rather than "Update"
- When downloading, row buttons should be insensitive and should be labelled "Downloading..."
- When I press "Restart & Update", the sections in the list row are cleared before the shell restart dialog comes up. This makes it look like everything is OK and has worked already, even though it hasn't.
