Bad UX for layered packages on Fedora Silverblue
gnome-software version: 40.1 OS version: Fedora Silverblue 34.20210601.0
Steps to reproduce:
- Install GNOME Boxes using the source "updates-archive (RPM)"
- Note that after installation there is an "Uninstall" button but no "Launch" button. This is because the package has been layered (and you can see a pending deployment in
rpm-ostree status
on the CLI) and a reboot is required, but there is no indication to the user that this is the case. - Go to the "Updates" tab and note there is a "Restart & Update" button for OS updates, but there's no way for the user to know this is how to finish installing the application they want.
Even if the official way to install apps on Silverblue is with Flatpak, I think we would still want a better UX than this in the cases where layering packages may be needed.
