Proposal: Search focused Launcher
Background story
I recently switched to Chrome OS after being a Mac OS user for over 10 years. After 3 months of using Chrome OS I noticed that Google is introducing UI changes which were downgrading the experience and I had 0 chance of impacting their decisions. I started researching how hard it is to modify Gnome and I began working on a GTK theme. The UX of gnome and especially the file manager is beyond apple, google, microsoft, felt like it came from the future. But I noticed that that full-screen Launcher could be better, however I do not have the skills to change it so all I did was a mockup.
Note: I noticed on Ubuntu's forums that lots of people are missing the Unity launcher. So that's another part of the story.
Needs and Outcomes
Make the launcher more about smart search rather than an app drawer.
Solution
- Make search the core of the launcher (similar to how mac and chrome os are handling it)
- Include web search results
- Add /commands similar to how Slack handles consistency when it comes to commands(different extensions).
- Remind users that they can install Modules/Skills/Extensions to the Search/Launcher.
