Overview animation stuttering regression (low FPS)
I'm out of luck with the series of optimizations from 3.32-3.36, I've even seen some noticeable regressions :(. Specifically, all of my performance problems happen in the overview animation, particularly when restoring a window (that is, zooming it in) and are much more noticeable with 3+ windows open in the current workspace. In 3.36 / Wayland / Kernel 5.6 I've to say that the animation is, for the first time, almost perfect. But, other than that, I'm still seeing low and variable FPS perceived as very apparent stuttering (like windows zooming-in cm by cm). Kernel 5.6 makes a big difference even in X11 but overall performance of the animation is still poor. Wrt my experience with 3.34 and kernel 5.2 I have to say that the combo 3.36 / 5.4 is clearly a regression (I can't say if because of the kernel alone or because of the interaction of shell and kernel) while 3.36 / 5.6 is a slight improvement.
Now, I'm sure it has to do with my hardware because most people are talking about how incredible performance is since 3.34, smooth as butter animations and all that:
- Huawei Matebook Pro X
- Intel UHD Graphics 620 / NVIDIA GeForce MX150 <-- I always use the Intel card.
- Screen: 3000 x 2000, 260 PPI
- Intel i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz
- 16 GB LPDDR3 2133 MHz
