Activities Overview Redesign Proposal
For current iteration see #2682 (comment 837824)
Hi, so I don't really know where to post this, but I saw the Shell blog post and thought here is probably the best place. If somewhere else is better (or there already is an issue somewhere that I somehow missed) let me know :)
Anyway, here is the proposal, descriptions included:
It is build on what I read on the findings of the UX Hackfest 2017, which concluded that vertical workspaces are practical and app icons on the bottom would be nice, but just moving the dash to the bottom causes visual inbalance.
Advantages of splitting the dash as proposed (IMO) are:
- visual balance is kept
- more favorites can be held, without compromising icon size
- added capability of filtering open windows by app
- clearly defined launching a new instance vs opening existing instance
- no more resource-heavy spread animation gimmick
- no more dangling grid button
- no more grid button metaphor needed
- no more running indicator dots
- workspaces still vertical (4 finger swipe)
- all/frequent apps selection more visible
