Gnome-shell skipping frames when opening the window overview
F31, Gnome-shell and Mutter 3.34.1 (but also happens with nearly all pending performance patches applied on top of that, using https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/pp3345/gnome-with-patches/)
Hardware: Dell XPS 9370, i7 8550U, UHD620, 16GB
The GNOME performance improved hugely with 3.32 and 3.34, thank you a lot for that! I nearly see no performance drops anymore, except when opening and closing the window overview (pressing Super). When having 6 windows ore more (that is at least for me the threshold), the animation of the windows transitioning starts not looking smooth anymore. The animation smoothness gets even worse, the more windows are open.
Therefore, I sysprofed my gnome-shell
and mutter
(Respectively xwayland, I did not find anything better matching mutter. Would there be a better matching process?) under the following conditions:
- 9 open windows (4
gnome-terminal
(two full-screen), 1evince
(full-screen), 1geary
(full-screen), 1sysprof
(full-screen), 1nautilus
and 1firefox
(full-screen)). - Record for 25 seconds. Let
gnome-shell
idle the first 5 seconds, open the overview, letgnome-shell
idle another 5 seconds, close the overview, letgnome-shell
idle another 5 seconds, open the overview, letgnome-shell
idle another 5 seconds, close the overview, letgnome-shell
idle another 5 seconds, end recording.
The results look like that:
Gnome-shell
