Right now, it is possible for an app/website/VM to spoof, either intentionally or accidentally, some important security-sensitive system dialogs: the login/unlock screen, and polkit prompts. I came across this when I accidentally typed my host system's password into a VM's polkit prompt. It's not out of the question for a website to fullscreen itself in the browser and then pretend to be a polkit dialog over a maximized browser window.
So, I propose that some of these prompts can first require the user to type in a sequence of keys that only gnome-shell will respond to. That can be Super+Esc, since that is already used to take control of the keyboard away from apps. More traditionally, this would be Ctrl+Alt+Del.
This would behave a lot like the "Secure Attention Key" of Windows (Ctrl+Alt+Del), often seen in corporate environments.
This is probably most useful in corporate environments.
### How would you like it to work
<!--
If you can think of a way GNOME Shell might be able to do this,

1. A system-level password entry appears. I.e.:
- GDM login screen
- Unlock screen
- Polkit agent
- GPG pinentry
- GIO disk unlock dialog
- Dialog proposed in #6921
2. Instead of presenting a password entry box, the UI prompts the user to press Super+Esc, or Ctrl+Alt+Del
3. The user presses the key sequence
4. The password entry appears (THIS is where an app/website/VM would diverge: they'd never receive the key sequence!)
5. The user types in the password

It's tedious and user-error-prone to have to remember to turn it on.
I would suggest storing that into a gsetting for the screenshot behavior, and decoupling the cursor behavior in video screencast recording vs the one in screenshots, automatically turning on the cursor by default whenever the user uses the screenshotting+screencasting feature and switches to screencasting (video recording) mode.https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/6757Allow to set "Alternate Characters Key" to None2023-06-10T13:36:25ZSwrowar hossaonAllow to set "Alternate Characters Key" to None<!--

I want to get the path of opened file(s) via gnome extension. The problem I am trying to solve is https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/745519/206574 . So basically when i use the shortcut, it will open the file that is opened via a gui application, in the file explorer. For that I need to log window id, process id and opened file path(s). Getting window id and process id seems to be easy (as can be seen in https://github.com/ickyicky/window-calls/blob/main/extension.js). But there is no elegant way to get the opened file path(s).
I have asked a question in details in https://discourse.gnome.org/t/get-the-opened-file-path-and-application-via-extension/15352 . The info I want is already in the dbus:
```
signal time=1684395360.751890 sender=:1.93 -> destination=(null destination) serial=971 path=/org/gtk/gio/DesktopAppInfo; interface=org.gtk.gio.DesktopAppInfo; member=Launched
array of bytes "/home/ismail/.local/share/applications/com.github.johnfactotum.Foliate.desktop" + \0
string ""
string "file:///media/ismail/SSDWorking/book-collection/_Books/Eleven%20Rings%20The%20Soul%20of%20Success%20(Phil%20Jackson,%20Hugh%20Delehanty)%20.epub"
]
string "origin-desktop-file"
variant array of bytes "/home/ismail/.local/share/applications/nemo.desktop" + \0
)
dict entry(
string "origin-prgname"
variant array of bytes "nemo" + \0
)
dict entry(
string "origin-pid"
variant int64 4877
)
]
```
**We can set the uris but can not get the uris**. There is no easy way to get the data (I have not tried it yet but think that it can be done using `signal_subscribe(sender, "org.gtk.gio.DesktopAppInfo", "Launched", "/org/gtk/gio/DesktopAppInfo", arg0, flags, callback)`).

If you can kindly give us a method (hopefully in both https://gjs-docs.gnome.org/gio20~2.0/gio.desktopappinfo and https://gjs-docs.gnome.org/meta12~12/meta.window) that will give use the opened file path(s), then it will be of great help.

Say you have one workspace for work stuff (let's call it "work"), and another for personal activities (let's call it "personal"). `gnome-text-editor` is already running on "work". If you switch to "personal" and open some file through the file manager, it will take you back to "work" and open it as a new tab there. That is annoying to me.

KDE Plasma does this. If you have Kate running on workspace 1 and try to open a file from workspace 2, it will start a new window on workspace 2 and leave the existing instance on workspace 1 alone.

The [extensions app](https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/tree/main/subprojects/extensions-app) should support "Donate" buttons for extensions, similar to the existing "Settings" and "Website" buttons.
### How would you like it to work
Extension developers can add something like this to their `metadata.json`:
```json
{
"donate": [
"https://paypal.me/myusername"
]
}
```
If donation links are present in the metadata, the extensions app will display a button (for a single link) or a dropdown list (for multiple links) in the extensions list. A click on the button or a list item will open the website.

As an example, [Colorblind Filters](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5589/colorblind-filters/) extension, it allows to correct colors so that people with color blindness can distinguish colors, that can't distinguish without a color filter.

It's called snap assist. It saves a lot of time when arranging opened windows and making them fit just perfectly in order to utilise the screen real estate in the most efficient way.
Snapping windows to the left, right, up still works the same but the new thing is that when dragging a window to the top there is a popup window that comes up with different depictions of the most used window arrangements. By dragging the window over a particular section of the depiction in the popup a user can choose where the window will get snapped on the desktop.
Windows additionally provides the same functionality when you right click the maximise button in the window titlebar but locally to the app window. Meaning that it opens a popup menu with the same depictions and then you click on one and your window gets placed in that region of the screen.
It's super efficient and super useful. I'd like to draw Gnome's attention to it and hopefully designers like it enough that Gnome gets it's own snap assist feature like that.

### Feature summary
Suggestion: always keep the brightness bar in the top-right shell popup operational, and achieve this via shaders on screens without backlight. This has multiple uses: 1. on some screens (e.g. OLED), simply darkening can save a lot of energy. 2. there are other reasons to darken the screen, e.g. I use it a lot when I'm tired to make it easier on my eyes (for which the current night light functionality is way less suited because it's way too inflexible), 3. it's more consistent.
### How would you like it to work
Brightness slider in top-right shell quick settings popup is always visible. For screens with no backlight controls, the RGB values of the outputted colors of the final image are adjusted via some sort of shader instead to achieve the dimming.

It should be easier to navigate to the system menu (quick settings) with the keyboard.
A Debian developer who uses a screen reader reported a Debian bug with symptoms similar to #5377. It seems that he usually navigates to the system menu with Ctrl+Alt+Tab to focus the top bar and the Activities button, followed by Shift+Tab to move focus to the left, wrap around to the far right and focus the system menu.
There is something weird and non-reproducible going on with focus management that means that pattern no longer works for everyone (see #5146, #5270, #5377), but I was surprised to find that it's necessary to navigate to the system menu in such a roundabout way: it's a sufficiently important menu that having to get there via Ctrl+Alt+Tab seems more like a workaround to me.
It seems like this would be easier with a specific keyboard shortcut for the system menu. Other items in the top bar have their own shortcuts (Super+S is basically the Activities button, Super+F10 opens the application menu, Super+V opens the calendar/clock/notifications) but the system menu doesn't have its own shortcut.
Neither does the accessibility menu, which seems ironic when keyboard navigation is most important for users with specific accessibility requirements - although I expect that most users will only access this menu while they are setting up the system the way they want, and then rarely or never go back to it, so perhaps quick access to it is less important.
### How would you like it to work
A configurable keybinding for the system menu, probably set up by the same code as Super+V, ideally with a Super+something shortcut assigned by default.
Optionally a keybinding for the accessibility menu too.https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/6387Associate events with calendar color in shell notification dropdown2023-04-28T16:56:21ZGeorges Basile Stavracas NetoAssociate events with calendar color in shell notification dropdownThere can be same event name for different calendars.
