Adopt/fork topicons extension
For GNOME users, the inability of gnome-shell to display notification area applets is quite a blow. Even GNOME now officially recommends use of the topicons extension.
However, the extension has been broken by yet another change in GNOME 3.30. The fix is trivial, but the developer has been unresponsive for months, so that non-technical users have lost the ability to display notification area icons in GNOME.
This is not the first time that this has happened, the Topicons plus extension came up when Topicons was broken in earlier times. To ensure, that this extension works in the future and is present on default GNOME installs, can't you just adopt or fork it and include it into gnome-shell-extensions? It also should be enabled in the Classic session by default, as a working notification area was definitely present in GNOME 2.x and many applications continue to rely on it.
