gnome-screensaver does not turn off the monitor

Description
I don't know if this was a design decision or a bug, but in Gnome 3.4, gnome-screensaver does not turn off the monitor, even though the settings says "Turn screen off when inactive for: ..."
It makes the screen blank instead, and it maintains the minimal top bar with clock and user name.
If this was intentional, there should be a functionality where it actually turns the monitor off automatically after some time of inactivity - such as after some time of inactivity in the "blank" screen.
I usually leave my office with my computer on (I remotely access to it when I'm home) and because of this I have to remember to manually turn off monitor before I do.
I'm using openSUSE 12.2 RC2 at the moment, but it was happening with openSUSE 12.1 Gnome 3.4 as well.
