Screen goes blank too suddenly instead of dimming gradually

I know this is the wrong repo, but I can't find the repo for "screen lock" or "privacy" in the docs or in the wiki. Please move appropriately.

The problem is that when the timeout kicks in, the screen locks in suddenly. If the user was watching the screen (e.g. terminal job running), they'll have to enter the password again. In Ubuntu 16/Unity, the screen gradually faded, which the user could easily see, and press any key to stop and reset the timeout counter. This was better UX.

Can GNOME do something similar?
