Default Theme's contrast makes it difficult to differentiate empty mines from the ones yet to be opened. The minefields with numbers are fine, but the uncovered minefield with no number looks very similar to that of a covered one, especially with GNOME Global dark theme applied.
A different theme with more contrast must be made default.
