Login keyring password randomly reset from blank to user password
Affected version
- gnome-keyring 3.36.0-1ubuntu1
- Application provider: Ubuntu 20.04.1 @ x86_64
- Related info: The same bug has been reported in as far back as 2012 (e.g., here).
Steps to reproduce
- Use a machine with auto-login enabled for the GUI.
- Set the login keyring password to blank.
- Reboot. Attempt to use an application that relies on the login keyring (e.g., Chrome or a samba share). Repeat.
- It will work for a while, but after some number of reboots (5-10, perhaps), it fails, and at step seahorse#3 I am advised that the login keyring was not unlocked and asked to enter the login keyring password.
- At this point, I discover that the login keyring password is no longer blank, but has been reset to the user's password.
- On subsequent boots, sometimes the keyring is unlocked (and has a blank password); other times it is locked (and the user's password is required to unlock it).
Current behavior
Login keyring password is reset from blank to user's password at random intervals.
Expected behavior
Once set to blank, login keyring password stays blank until user changes it.
