Show either analog or digital audio output, not both
I am not an audio expert, so apologies for any mistakes in this feature request. Right now, GNOME settings 3.34 exposes two audio output devices for most singular physical devices: an analog output, and a digital output. It appears to work like so: the analog output has the full volume range of the device, while the digital device is relative to the current analog volume max setting, e.x.:
- If analog out's volume is set to 100% / max volume, digital out's volume functions identically
- If analog out is set to 75% volume, digital out's max volume is only as loud as analog's 75% volume
- If analog out is set to 50% volume, digital out's max volume is only as loud as analog's 50% volume
Here is a picture showing 2 audio devices for my 1 Corsair headset, and 2 audio devices for my 1 PS4 controller
This is confusing compared to most other desktops, which present 1 audio output per 1 physical device; I think it would be more intuitive if GNOME worked the same way. Here are some examples:
Windows: 1 "Corsair Void Wireless Gaming Dongle" and 1 "Wireless Controller"
KDE: 1 "Analog Output (Corsair Void Wireless Gaming Dongle)" and 1 "Analog Output (DualShock4)," and whether it is analog or digital can be changed from the dropdowns in Advanced audio settings
PulseAudio Volume Control: 1 device for each, again analog or digital can be selected from the dropdown
