Settings shell: avoid nested sub-categories
We've had various anecdotal reports that people find the existing 'Devices' and 'Details' categories difficult to use, since it is hard to predict/remember which panels they contain. Over in Teams/Design/usability#2 (closed) , we have been testing a new design that potentially resolves these issues. I think that the new design has passed these tests sufficiently to proceed to implementation.
Implementation could go something like this:
Phase 1
Each item in this list can be implemented independently.
- Split the 'Color' settings out into their own separate app
- Remove the 'Sharing' panel:
- Split 'Media Sharing' and 'File Sharing' out into their own app
- Remove the 'Remote Login' setting
- Remove the 'Screen Sharing' setting
- Move 'Wi-Fi', 'Network' and 'Mobile Broadband' into a new 'Network & Internet' panel
Phase 2
- Remove the 'Devices' section
- Move 'Removable Media', so that is a sub-panel of 'Applications'
- Move 'Thunderbolt' so that it is a sub-panel of 'Privacy'
- Move all other 'Devices' panels to the top level
- Remove the 'Details' section
- Move 'Default Applications' so that it is a sub-panel of 'Applications'
- Move all other 'Details' panels to the top level
