System properties Network > Wired settings > IPv4 missing DNS domain search list field
On Ubuntu 16.04, the Unity Desktop Environment network panel offered a means to set DNS search data on fixed IPv4 connections (maintained via NetworkManager in the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ 'dns-search' variable.) For their latest LTS release, 18.04, Canonical made the move off Unity to the Gnome 3 UI. Unfortunately, this DNS search feature is absent in Gnome's gnome-control-center Network panel / system properties widget on the top bar.
Lack of support for this setting means the dns-search variable is left unset, which also causes /etc/resolv.conf to leave the search to be unset. This is unacceptable in a assigned-IP-address Enterprise environment, where all such settings must be manually specified.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open GNOME Settings (or click on network connection icon on system properties section of top bar)
- Open "Network" panel
- Click on "gear" icon by relevant wired connection entry
- On Wired settings pane, click on IPv4 tab
- In "DNS" section, notice that there is no place to enter a domain search order (one or more domains, space-separated)
