Sharing: Allow users to turn off VNC sharing
- gnome-control-center 42.2
RDP Remote Desktop Sharing was introduced in GNOME 42. Because we prefer to recommend the best way to get things done, the Settings app only shows options for RDP (which can be found in Settings > Sharing > Remote Desktop).
It's not currently planned to drop VNC support. You just have to use a command line tool grdrctl
to enable it.
VNC is less secure (the connection is not encrypted). I believe we should show some kind of warning to users when VNC sharing is enabled and provide a way for them to disable it.
Test Case
- Run
grdctl enable vnc
- Hypothetically, forget that you found that command in some guide somewhere
- Somehow, get reminded that you enabled it. Now that you no longer need it, disable it.
Expanded Proposal
Once we've gone that far, we may want to just go ahead and always show the enable VNC option but with some kind of discouraging people from using it.
For instance, here's how Ubuntu 22.10 (development) handles it: (This was also done on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS).
