User-interface freezes when creating a Debian VM

Host system information:

  • Distro: Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon 64-bit
  • Boxes version: 40.2 from Flathub
  • Flatpak version: 1.11.2

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to debian.org and download debian-10.9.0-amd64-netinst.iso

  2. Launch Boxes

  3. Click on the button to create a new VM

  4. Click "Operating System Image File"

  5. Select the Debian ISO from the file-chooser

  6. Check the "express installation" switch.

  7. Enter a username

  8. Attempt to enter a password

Expected result: I am able to enter a password for the virtual machine, and proceed to installation. Actual result: The Boxes interface completely freezes, not allowing me to click "previous," "next," or any other field or button. I attached a (cropped) screenshot of the frozen window.

When I close the terminal window to force Boxes to close, relaunching Boxes shows that the VM was not created.

The same ISO can be used to create a virtual machine in VirtualBox, which installs and launches without issues. Boxes also has no trouble creating a Fedora VM.

Here is the output of the terminal from performing steps 1-8:

flatpak run org.gnome.Boxes
