Resolve "Backport GMarkup/GVariant/GDBus fixes to glib-2-58 and glib-2-56" (glib-2-56)

Backport the patches from !411 (merged) and !422 (merged) to glib-2-56. The patches cherry-pick trivially, but some changes are required to not expose new API. Those changes are currently in the branch as fixups, to make it easier to review. I will squash them before merging.

This is trivially different from !447 (merged), so I’d suggest accepting it as soon as !447 (merged) is accepted.
