Unable to clone via SSH

Description
SSH repository at a [server] in folder /etc. The folder can be read by user [user]. Public key authentication is setup. For the sake of testing the passphrase from the private key has been removed.
Trying to clone the repository: ssh://user@server/etc --> authentication failed due to lack of callback user@server:/etc --> authentication failed due to lack of callback
Creating a test-repository "test" in home folder. Trying to clone the test repository: ssh://user@server/~/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback ssh://user@server/home/user/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback user@server:/home/user/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback ssh://server/home/user/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback
Cloning the test repository to a local folder "t" using git shell command with different options (as below). Adding "t" to gitg. Trying to fetch: ssh://user@server/~/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback ssh://user@server/home/user/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback user@server:/home/user/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback ssh://server/home/user/test --> authentication failed due to lack of callback
