Improve the vertical layout

If you look at the various Git apps out there, they all have one thing in common: they all use a vertical layout. There's a good reason for this: it enables you to see more commits in the commit list, and more lines of code when viewing diffs or files.
With gitg's horizontal layout, there are huge areas of blank space. (See the attachment.)
It would be great to improve the vertical layout so it is more usable, possibly with a view to switching to it by default in the future (see [1]).
Specific changes that would help here:
- Move the commit list to the left of the diff.
- In vertical mode, don't use columns for the commit list. Instead, have two lines of text in each list row (as seen in the mockups [1]).
