GitG is slow to load history

Description
The gitg website says that gitg can handle large repositories (loads linux repository, 17000+ revisions, under 1 second)
However, using gitg from the git repository on the master branch at 73e432f1, gitg takes over 8 seconds to load 9,900 revisions. This is on a machine with a quad core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. The same repository loads almost instantly in gitk. The repository I used as a test was cloned from https://github.com/django/django.
I used git bisect to find the revision that introduced this slow down was 2d95ef73, Improved charset conversion (fixes #623466). Before this change the revisions load in about 0.5 seconds.
This is possibly a necessary slowdown, in which case the website text should be updated to reflect the current status of gitg.
Version: git master
