GIMP should (offer to) clean up stale temp files on launch

Description
On Mac, Gimp stores his preferences inside: Home>Library>Application Support>Gimp>2.8>
sometimes i check directory 2.8 because i do regularly a backup of my preferences to prevent tool preset corruption, and the compressed file *.7z size is bigger than normal.
the 2.8 folder contains also a folder with name 'tmp' which is empty most of the time. But sometimes it stores a file for infinitely long time.
Is that a bug or did i miss to set something in Gimps general preferences ?
