Drop Shadows Combined in same layer as object

Issue Description
This is not really a bug, but more of an artist's perspective on a change in the 2.10 that creates a big problem for artists. Some of it is definitely a bug. But when 2.10 was launch it combined drop shadows into the same layer as the object it was creating the drop shadow of. The issue is when you combine the shadow in the same layer the artist can't do anything with it. And if the artist wants the shadow to be cast farther than the existing layer's boundaries then the shadow is cut off. There are lots of artistic things that can be done when the shadow is in a separate layer, like actually creating a picture where the shadows look realistic by contouring the shadow as it falls across an object. With it combined in the same layer this can't be done easily at all without also contouring the object along another object it is cast over using paths. Or by creating multiple layers of the same shadow an artist can easily create striated shadow lines. This can't be done with the new changes to drop shadow.
For me this was a big enough issue that I ditched 2.10 and went back to 2.8. I use drop shadows extensively. And with this one little change you've significantly limited what I can do artistically. It's a bad move. If you ever go back to making drop shadows a separate layer I'd love to move to 2.10. But otherwise, this one change is a deal killer.
To my knowledge there's no way to change 2.10 to make drop shadows a separate layer. I've searched everyone, the help menu, the bulletin boards... If there is I can't find it.

Just would love it if you guys would make drop shadows a separate layer. It was a bad move to combine them in the same layer.
