Mouse wheel zoom without modifier, preferences checkbox
Description of the feature
Add a preferences checkbox to swap the current behavior of:
- Mouse Wheel (without a modifier), Scroll vertically up/down
- Ctrl + Mouse Wheel, Zoom in/out
To:
- Mouse Wheel (without a modifier), Zoom in/out
- Ctrl + Mouse Wheel, Scroll vertically up/down
Inkscape has a feature just like this:
Edit > Preferences > Behavior > Scrolling > Mouse wheel zooms by default
It swaps the behavior of turning the mouse wheel with or without Ctrl held down.
It's unchecked by default: [ ] Mouse wheel zooms by default
- Mouse Wheel, Scrolls vertically up/down
- Ctrl + Mouse Wheel, Zooms in/out
When it's checked: [x] Mouse wheel zooms by default
- Mouse Wheel, Zooms in/out
- Ctrl + Mouse Wheel, Scrolls vertically up/down
A possible Gimp preference location and name:
Edit > Preferences > Interface
possibly under a Mouse heading.
It could say the same thing as in Inkscape:
[ ] Mouse wheel zooms by default
or
[ ] Zoom with Mouse Wheel, Scroll with Ctrl + Mouse Wheel
or something better.
Reason
It's more comfortable to zoom by just turning the mouse wheel without having to hold down a modifier.
But a more important reason is that a zooming issue has been solved when ctrl + mouse wheel zooming:
Mouse wheel zooming should center on cursor even at low zoom levels
but it seems like it's complicated to solve it for the current method of using input controllers to zoom with just the mouse wheel.
I'm sorry, input controllers are a very abstract concept, the zoom commands could just as well come from a midi controller or whatever device, we are not going to poke through abstraction layers in order to make the commands appear to come from the mouse.
You will have to use the control key.

Maybe it's easier to add a preferences checkbox to swap ctrl + mouse wheel zooming and mouse wheel scrolling.
This might also help others because there are a lot of tutorials on how to change gimp to zoom with just the mouse wheel.
Here's the explanation from the first page when searching for: gimp mouse wheel zoom
look under preferences- input controllers
dbl click main mouse wheel
click on - scroll down - edit
under view click on either zoom in or zoom out
