IPTC is saved as XMP, but GIMP gives the impression that it still uses IIM
GIMP-2.10.4
- When saving JPEG and PNG files, one has checkboxes for including Exif, IPTC and XMP.
- When viewing metadata, there is a separate tab for IPTC and for XMP.
- When editing metadata, there is no mention of XMP, but there are two separate tabs for IPTC.
This gives the impression that when saving IPTC, GIMP will write it to the (legacy) IPTC Information Interchange Model (IIM) tags. However, GIMP migrates the data to XMP.
i.e. I get the impression that the keywords will be written to Iptc.Application2.Keywords
, but they are written to Xmp.dc.subject
. GIMP is using the new standard, but the user interface reflects the old standard.
It would be more clear if you revised the user interface concerning metadata:
- When editing metadata, separate it into XMP and Exif. IPTC can be a sub-frame of XMP - that would be clear and reflect reality.
- When viewing metadata, the IPTC tab does not show any of the IPTC info I just wrote (issue #2007 (closed)), but it does show legacy IIM IPTC written by other software. This reinforces my impression that IPTC is saved as (legacy) IPTC, but it's not.
- When exporting JPG/PNG, show checkboxes for XMP and Exif. Don't show a separate checkbox for IPTC since its not separate.
