Font selector should provide more font preview, be a dropdown menu, support both (keyboard) "scrolling" and typing font name
Description of the feature
Currently (v2.10), the font selection tool looks like this:
In the Tool Options panel:
On the canvas, as a “floating” panel:
In order to modify the font, you need to either:
- click on the
Aa
button (in the Tool Options panel) to get a list of available fonts - select the font name in the text field (in either Tool Options panel or floating panel), erase it and start typing the name of the font you want to select
This is cumbersome because:
- the UI is not unified (fixed and floating panels don't provide the same options, in that case the
Aa
button is not available in floating panel) - you need to know the name of the font you're looking for if you decide to use the text field, and there is no preview of the font in that case
Compare this with the font selector in LibreOffice Writer, for instance:
As can be seen with this screenshot:
- It's a drop-down menu
- User can either scroll down (see: #4243) or type the font name
- There is a preview of each font (using the font name) as well as its variant in other languages
Proposal
A drop-down menu à la LibreOffice in both panels would be beneficial for users:
- easier browsing for the right font
- unified UI between floating and fixed panels
Thank you!
