GIMP 3.0 or 3.2 UI Prototype Based on User Feedback
Operating System: All/Windows
I conducted a couple of polls on my YouTube channel asking people what they feel like GIMP needs to improve the most with its UI. In one poll I asked, "What UI Feature Does GIMP Need to Improve the Most?" The winning answer (by a huge margin) was "Better Menus/Navigation" with 65% of the vote (687 total votes). I then recently asked, "What improvement to menus/navigation should be GIMP's top priority?" The winning answer in this case (so far) is "Better Menu/Navigation Placement or Positioning in GIMP Layout" with 44% of the votes (165 votes total thus far). Description of the feature
In response to these user polls, I have played around with a UI prototype for a future version of GIMP where the main menu is shifted to the very top of the GIMP UI (and made black because I think it looks cooler - red arrow), the image information is shifted below the main menu (yellow arrow), and the tool options are placed to the right of the image information (blue arrow). This tool options location is more consistent with pretty much every other piece of creative software out there (Inkscape, Affinity, Adobe, etc.), plus I think it looks a lot better.
I also shortened some items to make more space and to remove clutter. The image information is shortened as I believe it contains a lot of unnecessary or redundant information (such as adding "GIMP" to the end, or just containing too many words like "RGB color" instead of just "RGB" and "GIMP built-in sRGB" instead of just "GIMP sRGB." I also shortened some of the Tool Options as I believe some descriptions for the dropdowns could be contained on mouse hover instead of directly in the dropdown, for example.
This is a very rough prototype, but I hope it can inspire some UI designers or developers to start making the tweaks users want to see to GIMP's UI.
This prototype was made with GIMP 2.99.14 on a Windows machine.
