Checking for updates not working on MacOS

Environment/Versions

• GIMP version: 2.10.24
• Package: DMG from gimp.org via Homebrew
• Operating System: MacOS 10.15.7

Description of the bug

GIMP is not able to check for updates either automatically at startup or manually via the About window.

Console error:

gimp_check_updates_callback: loading of https://www.gimp.org/gimp_versions.json failed: Operation not supported

Reproduction

Is the bug reproducible?

Reproduction steps:

1. Start Gimp
2. Open About window
3. Click Check for Updates button

Expected result: Gimp checks for updates and reports if an update is available.

Actual result: Nothing happens.
