New Paint Select Tool Crashes GIMP for Windows on First Stroke When Using Any Image
GIMP version:
2.99.4
Operating System: Windows
Package: Windows Direct Download link on GIMP.org Development Downloads page.
I am reporting this bug knowing full well that the Paint Select tool is in its nascent stages of development and requires much work before it is tenable/stable. However, I hope this bug report will help provide insight into current issues being experienced by users like myself testing out the tool. Description of the bug
I have enabled the Paint Selection tool from the Playground settings, which produces a second paintbrush icon in the Toolbox towards the bottom.
Clicking this tool obviously activates it and brings up the tool options. I have tried setting the brush size to different values (i.e. larger brush, smaller brush).
When I have my brush selected and begin to paint (clicking and dragging my mouse on an image), the brush head freezes in place and an error message appears (fatal error: unhandled exception). When I exit out of the error message, the brush head remains frozen in place. If I try to click anywhere within the GIMP window, the program suddenly becomes unresponsive and requires closing (i.e. GIMP crashes).
I then need to reopen GIMP, and receive a message that GIMP has crashed and has salvaged the image from the crash. When I click to reopen the image, the image is opened back up and the single brush head/stroke displays on the composition as a selection area.
This behavior occurs on images of all sizes (I tried scaling images down first to ensure it wasn't an issue with GIMP not being able to handle the action on a large image), and also occurs when I create a simpler composition (such as a line of text on a plain white bavkgroud).
Reproduction
Is the bug reproducible?
Reproduction steps:
- Activate Paint Select tool by clicking on it in the GIMP Toolbox.
- Under Tool Options: Adjust stroke width to any size. "Mode" set to "Add to Selection." (in other words, doesn't matter what settings are chosen)
- Click on image window to begin painting a selection area
- "Fatal error: unhandled exception" message appears. I exit out of this error dialogue box.
- Clicking anywhere within the GIMP window (i.e. on the composition, on any of the tools, on a layer, etc.) makes GIMP become unresponsive. Windows asks if I want to close the program or wait for the program to become responsive.
- I choose "Close Program," then reopen GIMP. GIMP displays a message that an image file was recovered and asks if I want to open it or discard it. I open it.
- The image opens in GIMP and has a selection area the size of a single brush head stroke from the Paint Select Tool.
…
Expected result: Paint Select tool intelligently selects a foreground object from a background.
Actual result: GIMP freezes/crashes on the first stroke.
