Selection clipped outside canvas (or disappears)
Environment/Versions:
- GIMP version: GIMP 2.10.20 (revision 1)
- Package: Installer from gimp.org
- Operating System: Windows 10 1903
Note: bug reporters are expected to have verified the bug still exists either in the last stable version of GIMP or on updated development code (master branch).
Description of the bug
Selection doesnt stay intact off-canvas. Either got clipped, or disappears.
Reproduction
Is the bug reproducible? Always
Reproduction steps:
- Open any document (say Win + shift + s > drag and select > ctrl + V)
- (optional) Move the image layer off canvas
- Make a selection on-canvas: (case 1) or off-canvas (case 2). (if making off canvas, then enable view > show all first)
-
Case 1: Move the selection off-canvas (say over the moved layer)
Case 2: Change to a different tool (say bucket fill) - See the selection editor panel/dialog box
Expected result:
Case 1: The selection moves to off-canvas unaffected (like it does when within canvas)
Case 2: The selection stays there (like it does when on-canvas)
Actual result:
Case 1: The selection is clipped to canvas
(i never understood term clip - but i think that's what clipping means)
Case 2: The selection disappears
Additional information
- This behavior is much more confusing for situation/Case 2 as the selection just disappears after switching tool - without any clue/hint.
- This (selection staying intact) can be useful for example: to (bucket) fill some area of layer which is off canvas to fill (or effectively, erase) an area on the layer to use
