Layer Groups should be created with "Pass through" mode
"Pass through" mode should be the default, here's why:
- Pass through is what grouping is about, it's both logical and most frequently needed (especially due to GIMP's lack of layer multi-selection).
- The way it is now, even if you click the Mode of a group you'll see the list starting with Normal. To see "Pass through" you need to manage to spot that the scroll bar isn't at the top.
- If Pass through is the default and the user clicks on the group, he'll see a Mode that he's never seen before, so there's a bigger chance that he'll notice and will be aware that he can choose different drawing modes for layer groups.
Longer story:
I recently created an issue detailing the weirdness of groups behavior and proposing the creation of Pass through mode, only to find that it's already there, but not exactly where I was looking initially: #5303 (closed) The only reason I managed to find it is that I was specifically looking for it.
Use cases
Creating groups in order to move, hide layers simultaneously or simply group them together.
