Adding functionality of Select/Current layer rectangle

Hi,

I would have a feature request. I really miss possibility to select whole layer and convert it to selection. Normally when I use select all functionality in layer, whole layer is selected but when I change to other layer then the selection is changed to whole new layer.

I'm seeking for option to get rectangle from current layer. I've found more info about this on this thread: http://gimpforums.com/thread-select-all-and-layers I understood that I can get alpha channel to path but I really using rectangle areas of the layers and I would appreciate to get it in easier way.
