Resize Window on Zoom fails to use full screen

Description
If I use resize on zoom to enlarge an image, Gimp will not use the full screen. E.g. if I create a new image sized 640x400 and zoom in to 400 %, I get a 976x884 window (image viewport 934x800) on a 1280x1024 screen (without the toolbox window on this screen) or 1456x999 (image viewport 1413x917) on my 1920x1440 screen (with the toolbox on the same screen). The later size happens to fit the height of my second screen, but this happens at work, too, where I have two identical screens.
If I resize the window (on my large screen) to fit the screen minus the toolbox, then zoom out to 300 %, the window will be shrunk to be too small for the image, again. Zooming/unzooming above 400 % (too large) does not affect the window size.
On Windows, this bug is accompanied by placing these windows partially outside of the desktops.
I don't remember a Gimp version without this bug. I'm currently using Debian's Gimp 2.6.10-1+squeeze1 here.
Is it possible to let gimp use the full screen minus task bar (and minus the toolbox, if it's at the edge of the screen)?
