Missing fonts lead to displayed red replacement, but no display of the ORIGINAL name

It appears that missing fonts lead to displayed red replacement (like a red "Sans-Serif"), but no display of the ORIGINAL name. That just gives me a hint there is a problem, but absolutely no chance at actually fixing it. Since I really want to keep the font but I can't recall it's name, this is kind of a showstopper...
