Some way to "fix" original state of image in memory

Description
A user reports:
When GIMP goes beyond the undo steps limit, it is impossible to return to the original state, once save/export to the original file has been done (and thus file > revert does not apply either). It would be desirable if the original state would be always in the memory, so that no matter how far you go past the undo steps limit, you would always be able to return to the original by clicking the topmost item in the Undo History docker.
