display switches to unusable state after plugging in secondary monitor

Description
I have a thinkpad t400. Screen resolution 1600x900 When I place it on my docking station, connected to a 22'' monitor, (philips 222e) the display automatically switches to this monitor. However, it becomes all stripes and weirdness, as if the wrong resolution (like maybe the resolution of the laptop screen) is passed to the screen. I attached a photo from it. (the black spot is in the camera).
There is absolutely no way to get the display back at normal, except either unplugging the second screen again (so the display jumps back to laptop), or starting the display settings and guessing where I have to click to change the settings. I managed to do this once by randomly pressing tab, space and enter. In the rare case of success, I can select the correct screen settings and both displays work fine according to selected settings. Gnome clearly does not remember these settings next time I place my laptop on the docking bay, which is weird to begin with.
Except for this unreliable method I can't seem to get a hold of my big screen anymore, except for maybe rebooting, which I try to avoid; I generally only use sleep mode, so I never have to quit and reload software.
What can I say? this is absolute horror. I did not have this problem before updating to ubuntu 11.10.
I tried to find out which gnome version I'm running, I thought it was 3.x but when I run gnome-about it says version 2.32.1, which I find unlikely but, hey that's what it reads, right? I don't know where else to look for the version number.
Thanks for any help!
Version: 3.0.x
