RFE: gdm should probably not have a lock screen which appears after an idle timeout

Description
I find it annoying that I have to unlock gdm. (I have a VM that I start early because it takes a while, so then I only log in to it later on).
It would be great if the lock screen could be ripped out of gdm. It can still do the display blanking / DPMS thing.
Lock screens are to allow entering an unlock password, protect privacy, show non-private notifications and clock, allow someone to mute audio without entering the password etc.
None of these seem to apply to gdm.
I also notice this means the gdm "lock" screen has a power button which shows as "pause" (suspend), whereas the real screen has a real power button to shut down the machine. There's no reason for that and it annoys me.
